A UPS serves three basic roles: a backup battery, surge protector and power inverter. The backup battery and power inverter supplies power to your connected electronics in the event of a power outage, fluctuation or other disturbance. A UPS also guards against voltage spikes/surges, frequency noise/variation, harmonic distortion, and more, depending on the type of UPS you buy.

The backup battery in a UPS allows you to save/back up your data and shut down your sensitive electronic devices safely and/or avoid downtime altogether. For instance, the power capacity of the backup battery can buy you enough time to spin up power generators or supply power long enough until AC power is restored.

Line-interactive UPS systems are the next step up in power protection and cost from standby UPSs. With this type of UPS, the inverter is always on and connected to the UPS output. Line-interactive UPSs have automatic voltage regulation (AVR), using transformers to keep the voltage within set low/high limits (usually plus or minus 8-15% of the nominal voltage). Whereas a standby UPS would switch to battery power in such an instance, line-interactive UPS systems do not. This conserves battery power in the short-term as well as the battery life in the long-term.

Unlike standby UPS systems, the inverters of line-interactive UPS systems are part of the output and always connected. While the input AC power is flowing normally, the inverter is reversed and charges the battery. If the input AC power fails, the transfer switch changes direction within about 4-8 milliseconds, allowing the battery power to flow to the UPS output. These few milliseconds, while a quick enough transfer for most equipment, may not cut it for very sensitive electronics, so you may need to look to online UPSs.

Keep in mind a UPS will never support its full capacity, and the closer you get to capacity, the less battery runtime you will have. Plan for how much time you need to safely shut down your connected devices and account for this when considering how much capacity you need for your UPS system. Also, some UPS manufacturers offer extended battery modules (EBMs) to extend total runtime if that is a concern.

We hope this has guided your UPS buying decision. CDW offers UPS battery backups from all the top brands, including APC, CyberPower, Eaton, Tripp Lite, Vertiv and more. Whether you need to backup your home office or your data center, we get that backing up your work is vital.

Additionally, to learn more about how to recycle used UPS units, batteries, and other electronic waste, I interviewed Joe Day, director of global business development at TerraCycle Regulated Waste, a private firm specializing in hard-to-recycle materials. I also interviewed Linda Gabor, director of external relations at Call2Recycle, a battery-recycling nonprofit, and Call2Recycle CEO Leo Raudys.

Powering your home theater for a movie marathon during a storm is more difficult, and costlier, than simply buying a UPS. If you need long-term power, the capacity to keep refrigerators and other appliances plugged in, or a way to light up your whole house in blackout situations, off-grid options such as backup generators or professionally installed battery packs are the way to go.

Like our top pick, the BR1500MS2 has 10 outlets, two of which are spaced far apart enough to accommodate extra-large plugs. It has one more battery-backed outlet than our top pick (six versus five), so you could potentially keep a computer, monitor, external hard drive, modem, router, and NAS unit running without skipping a beat in the event of a power outage. Plus, the USB-A port and the more-powerful USB-C port on the front (which have a combined output of 19 W, according to our measurements) can help free up one of the surge-protected AC outlets, which might otherwise be occupied by a USB wall charger.

On the top, the Standby UPS 800VA has a single on/off button that doubles as all of the indicator lights for the unit: For example, the button turns solid green when the device is powered on and working, it flashes and beeps when the UPS is running on battery, and it turns solid and plays a constant tone when the battery is overloaded. This interface is less intuitive than that of other units, and it might make you resort to the manual (or this guide) to figure out what the UPS is trying to tell you, but it gets the job done.

UPS units typically use sealed lead-acid batteries, which (along with nearly every kind of battery used these days) can be recycled. Although most Americans recycle plastic, metal, paper, and cardboard on a regular basis, less than half recycle their used batteries and other electronic waste. This is a bummer, since batteries that end up in a landfill can leach heavy metals and other harmful chemicals into local soil and water systems. It also means that to make new electronics, manufacturers need to have more raw materials mined, rather than salvaging the usable components from old ones. To recycle your old UPS batteries, as well as the UPS units themselves (when they eventually wear out), you have a few options:

The Amazon Basics Standby UPS 600VA has mediocre battery capacity: In our testing, we measured a 30-minute run time at a 20 W load, and three minutes at a 300 W load. Plus, it has only eight outlets (four with battery backup), fewer than any of our picks.

What is a UPS System?A UPS, at its most basic, is a battery backup power system that supplies power long enough for equipment to properly shut down when utility power fails. It helps prevent loss of data and minimizes the stress a hard shutdown causes on your electronic equipment.

Why do I need a UPS System? In case of a blackout, the UPS switches immediately over to battery power to provide a continuous power source for the length of the battery. Battery life can vary by system and depends on how much power you use. The battery backup gives you time to power down sensitive equipment, servers, or even video game consoles without loss of data or progress. Different UPS systems also provide certain levels of protection for other power problems that arise.

Do I need sine wave output from my UPS?Utility power supplies electricity in the form of sine wave alternating current. When the UPS is in normal mode, it passes the same electrical sine wave to your connected devices. If the UPS switches to operate in battery mode, it either produces sine wave or simulated sine wave electricity to power your electronics.

This answer is largely dependent on what devices your UPS will be supporting and for how long. If you're hooking up a couple of desktop computers or a home entertainment system, you can typically get away with a 750 VA battery backup, which will give you ample time to save your work and shut down your devices properly without incident. However, for commercial setups like server farms, you'll need something quite a bit larger. Something closer to a 2200 VA backup can provide ample insurance to even the most power-hungry tech.

Not all UPS have replaceable or "hot-swappable" batteries. But unless you need to have your UPS remain on battery power for an extended period, having "hot-swappable" batteries isn't entirely necessary, and the lifespan for a typical battery can be anywhere from 3 to 5 years, meaning you shouldn't have to replace your battery very often. However, this isn't standard for every UPS.

Anything you plug into the wall with a plug runs on alternating current or AC. For a battery to power a device designed for alternating current, it must provide power in a sine wave. A pure sine wave, which has a much cleaner output, is suitable for sensitive electronics like newer TVs, servers, computers, audio equipment, and appliances that use an AC motor, like refrigerators or microwaves. Older TVs, water pumps, and motors with brushes can use modified sine wave output because they're not as sensitive. With modified or stepped sine wave output, motors will run hotter, and devices like computers will run less efficiently. For a UPS typically used for computer equipment, we recommend using a battery backup that produces a pure sine wave whenever possible. If you lose power infrequently and you're on a budget, you can probably get away with a modified sine wave, but we recommend shutting down your computer as quickly as possible in the event of a power loss.

I've never heard about replacing a battery causing the UPS to never be the same. The only UPS units that I've ever seen are just sealed lead acid batteries that wouldn't cause issues with the UPS electronics unless they weren't specced right (proper voltage and amperage rating). I've used APC and third party batteries and had luck with both. The third party batteries are generally cheaper so that is the way I would go. You don't need to replace the UPS unless there is something inherently wrong with the UPS electronics.

ABC's UPS replacement battery assemblies are 20% - 70% less expensive than OEM Batteries. Our batteries will give you top performance with double the standard industry warranty. ABC stands behind its product and offers a full 2 year warranty. This will save you money at time of purchase and reduce the number of times you need to purchase a replacement battery for your UPS units. Over the life of the UPS, this could save you hundreds of dollars. 041b061a72
